Meet Birdee

 Round Two of the American Apparel StAArt Up Fund has officially wrapped, and we’re thrilled to announce our newest winner: BIRDEE 王煒, a Sydney-based electronic pop artist whose unique sound and cultural identity are quickly cementing her as one to watch in the Australian music scene.

Originally from Parkes in regional New South Wales, BIRDEE 王煒 made the bold decision in 2022 to move to Sydney to chase her music dreams. The move marked a major turning point — one that came with personal growth, heartbreak, and a deeper sense of self. BIRDEE 王煒’s artistry goes far beyond music. She’s also a dancer, pianist, and fashion designer, and even created her own look for this feature video. True to her hands-on approach, she also designed her upcoming merch line for the StAArt Up Fund herself.

Her creativity is deeply influenced by her mixed heritage — Greek, Chinese, and Russian — which has shaped her open-minded approach to both music and art.

“The inspiration behind my design was to incorporate all different elements of who I am as a person as well as an artist, and have it be more of an artwork rather than a logo." adds Birdee.

It’s this blend of identities that inspired her to embrace her Eurasian culture and perform under the name BIRDEE 王煒, combining both her English and Chinese names. The result is a persona that resonates strongly with young third-culture pop fans, while also sparking curiosity among global audiences. Birdee’s fresh perspective and distinctive sound have earned her international recognition — with her songs playlisted across Southeast Asia (including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong) and, of course, in Australia.

The search continues - Round 3 of applications for the StAArt Up Fund will open soon, and once again we will award one emerging act with $10,000 worth of custom printed merch.
