What Is ReFlex Fleece and Why Does It Work for Winter?

Winter wardrobes do not need more noise. They need pieces that feel good, layer easily and keep showing up when the temperature drops.

That is exactly where ReFlex Fleece comes in.

Used across the American Apparel® fleece collection, ReFlex Fleece is a mid-weight fabric made from 70% combed ring-spun cotton, 20% recycled polyester and 10% polyester. At 258g/m², it brings together softness, structure and everyday warmth without the bulk of a heavy outer layer.

It is not technical alpine gear. It is better suited to the kind of winter most Australians actually dress for: cold mornings, changing afternoons, windy commutes and late nights out.

What Makes ReFlex Fleece Different?

Fleece is made to retain warmth while remaining comfortable enough for movement. ReFlex Fleece takes that familiar cold-weather idea and gives it a cleaner, more wearable finish.

The combed ring-spun cotton gives the fabric a soft, premium hand feel. Polyester adds resilience and helps the garment retain its structure through repeat wear, while recycled polyester makes up part of the fibre blend.

The result is a fabric that feels cosy on the inside but still holds a defined silhouette on the outside. That balance matters. A winter basic should feel relaxed, not shapeless.

Why 258g/m² Works for Australian Winter

Fabric weight changes how a sweatshirt feels and performs. Too light, and it may not deliver enough warmth. Too heavy, and it becomes difficult to layer or wear once the day warms up.

At 258g/m², ReFlex Fleece sits in the middle.

It is substantial enough for cooler weather but versatile enough to wear indoors, beneath a jacket or on its own during milder winter days. The mid-weight fleece is designed to provide warmth while remaining breathable and easy to layer through changing Australian conditions.

Start with a long-sleeve T-shirt or heavyweight tee, add a ReFlex Fleece layer and finish with a coat or puffer when needed. When the temperature shifts, remove the outer layer and the sweatshirt still works as the main event.

The RF498: The Everyday Pullover Hoodie

The RF498 American Apparel® Pullover Hoodie is the straightforward winter essential.

It has a relaxed, side-seamed fit with ribbed cuffs and a ribbed waistband for flexibility. The unlined hood keeps the silhouette clean, while the oversized pouch pocket gives you practical storage and somewhere to put cold hands. There are no drawcords competing with the shape.

Pair it with denim or cargos, or wear it with the RF491 Sweatpants for a full ReFlex Fleece tracksuit.

Easy. Original. Done.

The RF497: Built for Layering

For changing temperatures, the RF497 American Apparel® Zip Hoodie gives you more control.

Wear it open over a T-shirt, zip it up when the temperature drops or layer it beneath a heavier jacket. Its relaxed fit, on-seam side pockets and dyed-to-match zip keep the design minimal.

The zip hoodie is the piece that stays near the door because it works almost every time. Coffee run. Commute. Studio. Late-night walk. No outfit change required.

The RF496: The Clean Crewneck

Not every winter layer needs a hood.

The RF496 American Apparel® Crewneck Sweatshirt delivers the same 258g/m² fabric in a simpler silhouette. Its relaxed fit works over tees and beneath jackets, while ribbed cuffs and a ribbed waistband provide flexibility and help the garment maintain its shape.

Wear it as a matching tracksuit with the RF491 Sweatpants, or style it with loose denim and trainers. The lack of a hood also makes it easier to layer beneath coats without adding extra bulk around the neckline.

The RF494: A Different Proportion

The RF494 American Apparel® Cropped Sweatshirt proves that winter dressing does not need to hide the entire silhouette.

It has a boxy, slightly cropped fit with balloon sleeves, creating volume through the upper body while sitting cleanly at the waist. Pair it with high-waisted denim or the RF491 Sweatpants for coverage, balance and an effortless streetwear shape.

The fabric still delivers warmth. The crop simply changes the proportion.

Complete It with the RF491 Sweatpants

The RF491 American Apparel® Sweatpants bring the collection together.

They feature a relaxed fit, side pockets, an elasticated waistband and covered elastic cuffs. Match them with the RF498, RF497, RF496 or RF494 to create a coordinated winter tracksuit, or treat them as a standalone basic with a fitted tee and oversized jacket.

Why ReFlex Fleece Belongs in Winter Rotation

Good winter clothing should not only be warm. It should be wearable.

ReFlex Fleece works because it gives you enough weight for cooler days, enough softness for everyday comfort and enough structure to keep the outfit looking intentional.

Pullover, zip-up, crewneck, crop or full tracksuit. Choose the shape. Keep the fabric.

Winter handled.
